Guru Mukham A Gurukulam-Style Musical Retreat

Guru Mukham is a pioneering Gurukulam-style musical retreat conceived by Padma Bhushan Sangeet Laya Samrat Dr. T. V. Gopalakrishnan (Dr. TVG) and passionately led by Dr. Devie Neithiyar. This immersive program offers musicians and music lovers a rare opportunity to experience traditional Indian music training in its most authentic and holistic form — a living blend of discipline, devotion, and discovery.

Course Concept and Vision

The concept of Guru Mukham was envisioned by Dr. TVG, one of India’s most revered musicians, teachers, and thinkers, whose vision of learning extended beyond the classroom. Having trained legends such as A.R. Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja, Kadri Gopalnath, Bhupinder Singh, and Sivamani, Dr. TVG firmly believed that true musical mastery is not built on repetition alone — it is cultivated through immersive experience and guided mentorship.

Through Guru Mukham, he reintroduced the timeless Gurukula system — a way of learning where students live, learn, and evolve under the constant guidance of the Guru. The retreat brings together the best of both worlds: the sacred traditional ethos of Indian classical learning and the practical, structured approach of modern pedagogy.

Carrying this vision forward, Dr. Devie Neithiyar, premier disciple and foster daughter of Dr. TVG, has been executing and refining the program with unmatched dedication. A multilingual vocalist, voice coach, and performer, she has transformed Guru Mukham into a dynamic, inclusive space for learners from across the globe. Her leadership ensures that every participant experiences the true spirit of Gurukulam — where art, mind, and soul converge.

About the Program

Guru Mukham is an intensive residential retreat designed to nurture aspiring musicians through hands-on training, personal guidance, and shared musical experiences. It creates an environment where participants live amidst music — learning not just compositions and techniques, but also the values, discipline, and mindset that shape a complete artist.

Since its first edition in 2022, which welcomed a group of eight students from Malaysia, the retreat has grown exponentially. By 2025, it had already hosted three successful editions, drawing over thirty participants from Malaysia, the USA, and India — a true testament to its growing global impact.
